Origin Fitness were awarded the contract to refit the entire Carluke Leisure Centre gym for South Lanarkshire Leisure.
The project involved the complete redesign of the room including, flooring, lighting, branding, painting, a new reception design and the installation of new fitness equipment. Origin Fitness, working closely with our design and build partners G8 provided a complete transformation of the gym space. The plans for the refit were carefully prepared with feedback from the Vicki Kennedy the Manager and Chris Markey the Fitness manager who in turn provided the crucial feedback from the members.
Carluke fitness suite had been a popular gym, however it had been in use for several years on the site of a refurbished education building and was in need of a substantial redesign. Given a limited budget, the client's brief was to modernise the facility so as to ensure the customer experience was energised and the work out environment completed refreshed.
The space has been transformed from a gym hall with some fitness equipment into a state of the art fitness suite. The reception area in now a minimal desk to prevent a barrier for people entering the space, The fitness equipment is clearly divided into zones, cardiovascular, strength, rowing, free weights and a dramatically increased functional space.
A flooring pattern was soon established that related to the fitness zones including a feature tangerine globe linked to the free weights by a shuttle running strip, again in bold tangerine.
A brick faced wall that had previously been an eyesore was used as a loft style feature to link the design concept together. The grey mortar joints were referenced on a neutral grey sports floor. These tones were then reflected on grey skirting and light silver emulsion walls. Both vinyl sports flooring specifications were selected to have a top coat treatment so as the chance of scuffing reduced whilst cleaning and maintenance is made simple.
The free weights area was found to be on a weak sub floor and so we built it up with a strengthened new detail. Overall nearly 16,000 new screws were added into the whole area to ensure a robust lasting base. To soften the drop of free weights we specified and fitted a dual layer of TVR matting, made from recycled rubber and imported from Germany. The level change between sports vinyl and free weights flooring was achieved using an engineered Gradus trimming piece.
South Lanarkshire Leisure & Culture Ltd in conjunction with Origin Fitness planned and successfully implemented a major refurbishment of the Health and Fitness gym at Carluke Leisure Centre.
From the outset the project involved working closely with Origin Fitness staff and design partners to ensure the refurbished facility reflected the high standards of functionality and design that already existed in other SLLC operated sites.
The on-budget and on-time project has been well received by customers of the facility. The new enhanced range of equipment includes space for functional training and access to revolutionary Star Trac eSpinner's.
The finishing touches to the look and feel of the project involved the site Manager, Vicki Kennedy working closely with G8 Designers. In summary SLLC are delighted with the project and would have no hesitation ion recommending other operators to consider this approach to improving fitness facilities.

Branding using wall imagery brought the finishes, existing brick wall and equipment together so the gym had a unique and inspired theme. Key areas were the rowing zone with gym rowers facing a monochromatic wall mural of the real river activity, whilst a 10 meter long mural of motivational quotes beside active gym images adorned the urban brick wall. This mural was enhanced with 10 feature led warm glow lights.
At the entrance bold arrows beside new GYM lettering has been fitted to ensure the area has a positive identity. A more subtle mural has been shaded onto a viewing panel so passers by can be tempted to look into the area. Other areas of work included improving the audio visual systems and then linking the new equipment to the system as well as alterations to various electrical services to tidy up the environment.
Feedback has been tremendous and it goes to show that even on a relatively small job - having attention to design detail, a supportive client and then great tradesmen on site, the effort is worthwhile and long lasting.
The very latest Star Trac touchscreen cardiovascular technology has been installed along with the Star Trac Inspiration and Human Sport Strength ranges. The free weight area now has a Max Rack and we have also provided a specifically designed functional area within the space.
