Origin Fitness worked with North Lanarkshire Leisure to completely redefine their fitness facilities at Wishaw Sports Centre.
While the self contained free weights suite and dedicated Spinning studio were both redesigned and equipped with the latest kit the industry has to offer, the monumental change for this gym was the transformation of an indoor five-a-sides hall into the main fitness suite.
When Wishaw was refurbished five years ago, the gym was around 140sqm over two levels in a space which was a converted squash court. The equipment type was skewed 60% CV, 35% fixed resistance and just 5% free weights and stretch areas in the main gym.
Now, the original squash court spaces have been turned into a Spinning studio and Judo Dojo and the new fitness suite space has increased to 585sqm with a separate 90sqm free weights room. The ratio of equipment in the facility is now 50% CV, 10% fixed resistance, 20% free weights and cables, and 20% functional. This amounts to 137 stations plus huge open plan functional zone compared to just 56 stations prior to the refurbishment.
The NLL membership, especially at the Wishaw Gym is incredibly diverse, so a key objective for Origin Fitness was to ensure that the equipment installed catered to all different types of user.
As well as increasing the fitness suite’s capacity, NLL wanted to create a modern facility which didn’t just focus on cardio and strength machines but facilitated and encouraged more creative types of training.
The gym design for Wishaw Sports Centre adopts a very open planned, zoned layout. The new, exciting centrepiece of the facility is the large functional training zone. This are is focussed around a custom built functional training is defined by the use of a specialist gym floor tile to cover this area, featuring custom branding and functional markings.
The end of the facility closest to the entrance could be considered the cardio zone, although the treadmills run almost the full length of the gym. On the opposite wall, is a cable strength area which runs into the strength zone at the far end of the main fitness suite. Within this area there is a wide variety of resistance machines as well as a small selection of free weights to supplement the separate free weights room.
With the Wishaw gym being such a large site, NLL have had the ability to work with Origin Fitness to provide a selection of products that adds even more variety than has been offered by the trust before. The addition of specialist items like Wattbikes, Versaclimbers, WaterRowers and Fluid Rowers adds a whole extra dimension to the CV zone. Similarly, with free weights, cable strength, plate loaded and fixed resistance machines from both Star Trac and Cybex, the strength equipment selection is unlikely to be rivalled in any previous project either NLL or Origin Fitness has undertaken.
The functional, stretching and free weights spaces are equipped with the high quality Origin Fitness ranges as well a few other specialist brands such as TRX and CrossCore suspension trainers.
We are delighted to be working in partnership with Origin Fitness to roll out our next generation of gym installations that will help us remain at the forefront of the health and fitness sector.
Origin Fitness understands that the changing patterns of public demand mean industry trends are moving towards new and traditional functional and resistance training methods.

The response to the Wishaw gym has been exceptional and the public’s reaction to the facilities has been evident with over 360 new members joining within four weeks of the gym reopening. The feedback from staff and members has been incredibly positive, with a glowing endorsement from local Commonwealth boxing hero Charlie Flynn as seen in the launch event video below.
We'd love to show you what we can do.
